More often than not, people wonder if carmakers' claims over the numbers of their powerful offerings match the figures in the real world. Thankfully, there are firms and even individuals who are willing to measure those numbers in the real world. Just recently, Johnny Bohmer Proving Grounds (JBPG) tried to see whether the 2020 Shelby Mustang GT500 is really as fast asFordclaims.

Proving Or Disproving The GT500's 180-MPH Top Speed

Sent to a concrete runway in Merritt Island, Florida, this 2020 Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 is an all-stock production car, which means it hasn't been tuned or modified for better performance. This potent snake is powered by a 5.2-liter V8 supercharged engine that sends 760 hp of max output and 625 lb-ft of peak torque to the rear wheels via a seven-speed automatic gearbox.

Ford claims its most powerful Mustang so far has a top speed of 180 mph. While we want to believe Ford, only a few people can test their cars to the limit. This is especially true on urban roads where traffic is the best enemy. Even when there's open space without traffic, it won't be long enough to determine how fast a Shelby GT500 can be.

A Suitable Test For Gauging Top Speeds

But NASA's landing facility for its space shuttle in Merritt Island is a suitable place to find out if the Shelby GT500's top speed is as good as claimed. This runway measures 3 miles long and boasts 1,000 feet of asphalt runoff. This is where JBPG has been conducting its Straight Line Aerodynamic Testing, which is meant to verify carmakers' speed claims.

Wrapped in Rapid Red finish and weighing 4,171 lbs., this Ford Shelby Mustang GT500 zoomed from a standstill to forever like there was no tomorrow. By around two-thirds of the run, the Shelby GT500 already reached 180 mph—the claimed top speed. It slowed down a bit but still managed to get a second wind and surpassed 180 mph again near the finish line.

Employing monitoring systems to check the top speed of the cars it's testing (Garmin and Racelogic), JBPG measured the top speed of the Shelby Mustang GT500 in subject at 181.76 mph (292.52 km/h). That's 1.76 mph faster than Ford's claims!
